Monetarism

What is Monetarism?

The school of thought that the money supply is the main driver of inflation and nominal spending.

Understanding Monetarism

Associated with Milton Friedman, monetarism argued that "inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon" and that central banks should aim for steady money growth rather than fine-tuning.

Many of its ideas, such as the importance of controlling inflation and of expectations, were absorbed into mainstream central banking, though money-growth targets were largely abandoned as velocity proved unstable.
