Understanding Stock

Owning stock gives you a claim on part of a company's profits and assets, and usually a vote on certain matters. Stocks are also called shares or equities.

Returns come from price increases and dividends. Stocks have historically outperformed bonds and cash over long periods but can fall sharply in the short run.
